CR2040 Deep Creek Rd s(u)
After two triess for higher
points in the Uinta Mountains had been
scrapped because of mud and snow, that I could
never have imagined, let alone see from the
bottom, I was ready to try a lower summit.
What a pleasant road and ride, with almost
nonexistent traffic. And once you get far
enough down and away from the crest of the
Uinta mountains you can even see the snow on
the top, that still persisted till this May.

Approaches
From East. The profile
starts out, passing through Vernal's most
refined neighborhood. The residences are
interspersed between cream colored rock
monuments of Dry Fork Canyon. But it does not
last very long before the road extracts itself
from all those flags and lawn monuments, and
enters a farm environment. Where Dry Fork
Settlement Rd turns its slope to the higher
canyons, this road stays in the same valley and
remains hardtopped a few more miles till the
last of the residental houses have been
collected.
After that, it
becomes a hard gravel road and becomes
intermittently quite steep, where it climbs over
an initial hogback ridge. At the top a spur to
the north leads to a better, but still
snow-blocked viewpoint of the Dry Creek Canyon
entrance and the valley below. Just for
future reference, according to the map, this
spur is the beginning of Pine Ridge road,
terminating at ~8200ft according to the map.
From South.
(described downwards) Over here the theme is
large ranches, and the road obeys. It seems to
follow land boundaries along rectangular
patterns. This makes for an interesting route
with many unpredictable curves. The last ranch
in the biggest, and for a minute it looks like
the road is actually going to end here, but
instead it just comes very close to any number
of fences and gates. By this time pavement has
started up again. So the unpaved portion over
the summit was really very short. The pavement
here is actually rougher than most unpaved
surfaces. After a few more active ranches, the
road gradually straightens and follows natural
ravines down into the Unita Basin. It ends at
the jct with Ut122.
