Cedar Mountain Lookout s(u)
Cedar Mountain is the last wedge
shaped landform, terminating the San Rafael
Swell on the north side. It can be seen as
orientation landmark from most any high point
in the Swell north of I70. This summit is a
tale of two roads, one smooth and easily
climbable, the other steep, rocky and barely
even walkable.

Approaches
From West. Anywhere
you start this gentle climb, it is still in
Castle Valley. But this part does not look like
the scenery the San Rafael Swell is famous for.
Here it is just a sweeping grassy surface. Like
the nearby climb to "the Wedge" Cedar Mountain
is another wedge too from this side. Looking
back there are a few tempting views of the
Wasatch Plateau, crowned by snow. But looking
ahead it is just an inclined plain with Cedar
forest becoming more and more prevalent,
as one might suspect. The road does finally
reach the rim. Compared with "the Wedge" this
place is still undiscovered. Extended patches of
forest separate the spots where the rim is
accessible. There really is no Lookout on top,
just a series of transmission towers, and a
picnic area a short distance before the highest
point. Assembly Hall Peak forms the center of
the panorama below
From East. (described
downwards). This road does not terminate at a
locked gates of anything It keeps going, soon
reaching another transmission dish, and a wide
road which gives the impression of being a
landing strip. For all I know it is a landing
strip. The small dirt road extension past that
just ends in the forest.
There is however another signed
dirt road heading east, from about mid way on
the landing strip. It heads for the rim with
hardly a bend, and then transforms into a god
awful rocky ATV trail that just goes over the
rim. It is definitely not ridable. But the views
of Chimney Rock below and the horizontal pages
of the Book Cliffs behind Green River are
mesmorizing, weather not riding or walking. And
this way I can even enjoy the view, between
getting rocks out of my shoes. The walking
section is about 3 miles long. Past that a
somewhat sandy network of unsigned roads all
head in direction Green River Cutoff. Once that
junction is reached it's clear sailing on hard
pressed or medalled pavement all the way back
home. In case of looking for this junction in
the other direction, it is signed, Chimney -
Ghost Railway Historical Complex.
