Swell) (ow)
This road is comparatively
boring, when compared to the point it delivers
you to. This rim (at least this part of it) is
one of the most popular and scenically
interesting in the San Rafael Swell.
Especially the lower approach of the road is
hard medalled and a speedy gravel road ride.

Approaches
From South. Castle
Dale already sits up on a low bench of the
Wasatch Plateau. So it is not surprising that
the approach from there goes through a lower
point in Castle Valley. It is about 3 miles
distant from the town, and the profile states
here.
The following Green River Cutoff
is a fantastic cycling road in my opinion, and
that even though it is signed as a truck hauling
route and traversed by coal trucks with a second
trailer. I've seen a few of them, and they are
far and wide in between on this route. The road
is wide and hard medalled and a great fast
aerobic ride. The various rock ornaments remain
far on the horizon on this route through the
dessert.
Even after the turnoff onto signed
Wedge Road, the canyons and cliffs remain
elusive. The road is now gravel, far from the
smooth surface left behind, but still an
excellent ride. There is no hint of the rim
until you actually arrive on it. And then there
are several far reaching options to explore it.
All of them remain within 300ft of the highest
point, which is very close to the signed "Little
Grand Canyon" viewpoint.
The road along the rim, direction
west becomes increasingly rougher, and just may
have the most view variations on the scenic
canyon theme. It leads east to the Wedge
Overlook and a conflunce of canyons, Cane Wash
with the San Rafael River. Bottle Neck Peak and
Assembly Hall Peak give this area also a
mountainous feel. At the end of the road
Goodwater Rim Trail continues counterclockwise
along whatever particular plateau we happen to
be on right now. It connects with a dirt road,
leading back to Wedge Road.
