BLM4102 Tri Territory area - Jack Morrow
Creek(sh)
This shoulder summit point is
within a couple of miles of BLM4102 and its
Tri Territory Monument. Combined with a more
primitive track, this leads to a point that is
just a little higher, and an even more perfect
vantage point onto the Wind River Range and
Oregon Buttes, compared with the direct
approach to the Tri
Territory Monument via BLM4102. But that
doesn't mean there aren't even better points
higher up on Steamboat Mtn, where I have not
been yet.

Approaches
From North-1. The
profile starts where a signed intersection
offers a way to graveleer your way either to
Oregon Buttes or Freighters Gap, that is CR21 or
CR83. The profile goes gently up CR83, a small
relatively moist ravine, where I encountered a
group of 3 wild horses with their lead horse
patrolling in both directions as I was passing
through. It wa surprising how close they stayed
to the the road in this relatively narrow gap.
Right where a point, that looks
llike a summit point comes in sight (but isn't
because it doesn't drop much on the other side),
an unlabeled less used track takes off direction
Steamboat Mountain. After a few miles, going
gets a little slower, rougher and steeper. A
lonely abandoned looking trailer marks a point
where this track splits again in this lonesome
valley. The profile follows the more used
southern track. A short steep climb leads to
impressive views of the distant Wind River
Mountains. A photogenic solitary tree marks a
spot near the summit point. This point is
located immediately after a T-junction, where
the path of travel reverses back towards the
east. The option of going west promises another
approach option over a higher point. But the
summit point on this profile is also a perfect
vantage point onto the Oregon Buttes and the
Wind River Range.
From
North-2. (described downwards) A short
descent leads to BLM4102. Both directions offer
day loop possibilities. But in order to
demonstrate the ride below, the profile turns
left and follows a shallow canyon rim to the Tri
Territory Monument, onwards to a junction with
CR83. This turns out to be the false summit
point, visible from the last turnoff following
upper Jack Morrow Creek.
