Approaches

From West. The profile starts at I80 exit 111 and follows a well service road to North Baxter, which must be a named gas compressor station, or other petroleum service thing. The road surface is variable, but mostly acceptable.

At a T junction we are finally on CR18, which is better maintained. Two small, false summits give way to a real summit with far views to all the major landmarks, Pilot Butte, Aspen Mountain and Wilkins Peak, all of which make great gravel biking goals. The last traverse to the summit is clearly visible from I80, once you've ridden it and know what it looks like it is recognizable too. The top is an attractive spot.

From East. (described downwards). On this side the road quickly immerses itself into the shallow rocky ravines, that are so characteristic of these hills. But soon a smattering of houses plastered between trees on hillsides appears in the field of view. This is Superior, an interesting mixture of old town decay, organized around an old caboose and town park with an uncharacteristically impeccably cared for lawn in the center.

The rest of the approach descends lazily on paved Wy371 back to the center of the dessert valley, where the interstate highways tend to make their home, I80 in this case
