This is one of those roads with
an ideal surface for gravel biking, at least
it was during the summer of 2025. It goes over
a summit, as shallow as its views are vast in
all directions of historic Oregon Trail
country.

Approaches
From North. a
incredibly well surfaced Bar X Rd leads from a
signed turnoff on Wy28 south. The many changes
in direction through this checkerboard ownership
pattern can be confusing. Good thing the Wind
River Range to the north serves as a directional
beacon, as well as scenic support. The road
climbs one big, ever-so-gentle bread loaf. At
the top, there is an actual pullout, as if you
would need an excuse to stop. At this point, the
first vista direction south appears. The locally
highest mountain appears, Essex Mountain behind
the Tri-Territory Monument, and also the lowest
gap through to the south, Freighter's gap.
From
South. (described downwards) Great
views of the Wind River Range remain a while
longer, as the road crosses several rollers. In
a downwards direction it is not clear that the
last bump in the road was also the real summit.
In an upward direction it is more obvious. But
continuing down from the summit direction south,
a rare signed junction forces a choice between
direction Freighter's Gap on CR83 or staying on
CR21 direction Oregon Buttes. The profile leaves
CR21 and follows CR83 so that it can show a
lower starting point on this side, located on CR17 Chilton
Rd.
