FR102 Gypsum Creek Rd s(u)
One way to look at this summit
is as a trade in - trade in the climbing over
FR102, trade out the horrible washboard of
Green River Road. But in my case it was going
to be a dayloop, and that meant climbing over
FR102, and the washboard torture is reserved
for the return. Also - there are some
legendary views to be had on the described
additional out-and-back summit on FR689.

Approaches
From South. The
turnoff to Gypsum Creek Rd is just before
the Green River Road passes the Bridger National
Forest sign, in the last enclave of housing
before private ownership is no longer in the
cards. The road winds steeply upwards, going
through the national forest boundary community,
until this road too crosses the boundary. The
surface is great for gravel biking with a vary
variable pitch, few if any rocks and a few deep
ruts to keep things interesting. To the west a
few lonesome cones crown a bread loaf plateau.
From the summit there are really no views.
From North.
(described downward) And on this side the
road stays in forest for practically the entire
decent too. The views of the Wind River Range
are hidden by the adjacent slope along the road
for the most part. The upper surface is a little
rockier than the rest.

Out and back on FR689:
The turnoff to FR689 is after most
of the climbing along Gypsum Creek is over, but
clearly before the two-way summit itself. The
out and back is quite a bit rougher. FR689
splits one more time. The lower option goes to
the base of Ship Mountain, but the profile
follows the high option to a grassy knoll. This
landform is just at the right angle to allow a
pretty good view of the attractions at the end
of the Green River Lakes Rd, with impressive
canyons leading up towards the peaks. A short,
very steep pitch about half a mile from the end
of the track makes leaving the bike and walking
the last part of FR689 a logical choice, in my
way of thinking.

sandy/rocky washboard road known to bikerkind.
The route contains a minute amount of pavement
at the start of FR102.
