For pavement bikers this is the
closest you can get to the main ridge of the
Wind River Range, and it is not that close. It
is still the biggest road climb between Uinta Pass and Teton Pass
in their respective, distinguished, different
mountain worlds. But this is just an out and
back climb, which does also have benefits.
Time seems to pass quickly in the peace and
quiet on immaculate pavement, anticipating
what may lie on top. I rode this on a Saturday
in June, and even then, there wasn't more
traffic than I found comfortable, because in
the case of an emergency it might be nice if a
car passes once in a great while.

Approaches
From South. The
turnoff to Fremont Lake Rd is at the very
southern end of Pinedale, and the turnoff is
conspicuously signed. The road hops along over
low sagebrush hills. At the turnoff to the
Fremont Lake campgrounds, there is also a short
alternative parallel route to connect back down
to Fremont Lake Rd direction Pinedale. Maybe
best to leave that for a possible return option.
Looking for additional pleasant miles, I also
liked the road along the eastern shore of
Fremont lake. It has a maze of campground roads
at the end.
Back to the main road. Finally it
climbs into dense evergreen forest, that somehow
seems wondrous, after having cycled for so many
days through nothing but sagebrush, with the
mountains remaining at the distant horizon. When
the first good Wind views appear through the
trees, it is actually a sign that the climb is
about to be over, and the road is about to end,
with no ifs ands or buts. A very short dirt road
may lead a few feet higher, but doesn't
accomplish anything in the views department.
From here on the mountains are the property of
the horsepackers and a few backpackers and
climbers, and they have to descend back down to
a river and climb back up on the other side, to
enter the rock world of the "real Winds"
