US191 Little Mountain area s(u)

The first time I rode the US191 traverse along Little Mountain, I was under the impression I was skirting the Uinta Mountains. This mountain did not seem little to me at all. But actually the Uinta ridgeline is far away from here. These are outlying plateaus that have been left over by the Green River and its tributaries. If you follow US191 like the profile below this is pretty obvious, because you can see the Uinta ridgeline. But I was on a gravel ride up from Clay Basin Rd and continued north, and on that option the Uintas remain a hidden mystery.

In summary - compared the the snow covered Unita main ridge, this mountain is little, but really notable for its stark and bare scenery that becomes ever more so as US191 heads north.

Approaches

From South.
US191 reaches a kind of low point near the Spring Creek access road to Flaming Gorge shore points. The road climbs into juniper forest with ever improving views of the Uinta range behind. Along the way there is also a short downhill. This coincides with a jct to a gravel road, that is the key to circuitous connections to ride up Little Mountain itself, not just traversing along it, like US191 will do on the other side.

From North. (described downwards) The Uintas disappear and the traverse above a semi dessert basin begins. While taveling northwards, the exposed rock strata and wedge shaped mountains appear austere and stark. But if traveling southwards, they already seem more richer in form and comforting, compared to the wind blown slanted plains with their snow barriers and geometrical valleys north of here. A short descent with nary a tree in sight leads to the next summit under Ramsey Peak.
